GALA Tokoname STEAM: Oil Spill Cleanup Lesson 3 and 4

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. In this 2 hour class we used English to learn about all these topics in fun, engaging and unique lessons. Students are encouraged to teach themselves and communicate only in English. Lessons perfect for children with advanced or strong English abilities. Let's have fun using English!

この2時間のクラスでは、英語を使ってこれらの分野を楽しく、魅力的でユニークな方法で学びます。生徒たちは自ら学ぶことを奨励され、英語のみでコミュニケーションを取ることが求められます。

In Lesson 3 and 4 students embarked on an exciting and educational journey to understand the impact of oil spills and the importance of environmental protection. The lesson began with an engaging hands-on activity where students designed and constructed their own oil-proof protective clothing using simple materials like trash bags. This creative exercise not only sparked their imagination but also emphasized the importance of protective gear in real-world scenarios.

レッスン3と4では、生徒たちは油流出の影響と環境保護の重要性を学ぶための楽しくて教育的な旅に出ました。

レッスンの始めには、実践的なアクティビティとして、生徒たちはゴミ袋などのシンプルな材料を使い、自分だけの防油保護服をデザインし、作成しました。

この創造的な演習は、生徒たちの想像力を刺激するだけでなく、実際の場面での保護具の重要性を強調することにもつながりました。

Handmade protective gear! So stylish!

Once the students were suited up in their makeshift protective clothing, we simulated an oil spill by pouring a mixture of black paint and vegetable oil into a model ocean, complete with islands that the children had crafted earlier. This visual and tactile representation of an oil spill brought the environmental issue to life, making it more relatable and urgent for the young learners.

生徒たちが手作りの防油保護服を身につけた後、油流出のシミュレーションを行いました。

黒い絵の具と植物油を混ぜた液体を模型の海に注ぎ、さらに生徒たちが事前に作成した島も配置しました。

この視覚的で触覚的な体験により、油流出による環境問題がよりリアルに感じられ、子どもたちにとって身近で緊急性のある課題として理解を深めることができました。

The students were then tasked with cleaning up the oil spill using a variety of materials provided to them. These materials included items such as sponges, cotton balls, paper towels, and even natural absorbents like sand and sawdust. Each group of students experimented with different methods and recorded the effectiveness of each material in their class books. This part of the lesson was particularly messy and fun, allowing students to engage in trial and error while learning about the properties and effectiveness of various cleaning materials.

Throughout the activity, students not only learned about the challenges of cleaning up oil spills but also gained insights into the importance of using the right materials and techniques. The hands-on experience fostered teamwork, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of environmental science.

By the end of the lesson, students had a newfound appreciation for the complexities of environmental cleanup efforts and the importance of protecting our oceans. The activity was combining education with creativity and fun, helping students to think for themselves in English and learn how to overcome new challenges!

次に、生徒たちは油流出の掃除に挑戦しました。

スポンジ、コットンボール、ペーパータオル、砂、おがくずなどの材料を使い、それぞれの吸収効果を試してクラスノートに記録。手が汚れる楽しい実験となり、試行錯誤しながら清掃材料の特性を学びました。

この実践的な活動を通して、生徒たちは油流出の清掃の難しさや適切な材料・技術の重要性を理解。チームワークと問題解決力を育み、環境科学への関心を深めました。

最後には、海を守ることの大切さを実感し、英語で考え、新しい課題を克服する力を養うことができました。
